It was only days ago that Grace Sun (Merrick, NY) was sitting at the final table of the Ladies Event, chasing the trophy that has eluded her. The thoughts of two runner-up finishes in Borgata Poker Open events was likely going through her mind, but it was a fourth place finish she'd walk away with. Sun had her chance once again today best her runner-up finishes, and she finally got the win she so desperately wanted.
Grace Sun took home $28,866 in her first Borgata Poker Open event win, besting Patrick Lavecchia (Philadelphia, PA) in a heads up match that was back and forth over a 90 minute span. "Yes!! Yes!! I did it...I won," Grace exclaimed as she went to embrace her rail. She also got a very nice round of applause from onlookers and players sitting at surrounding tables.
Grace seemed to shift gears throughout the event, and seemed to get the breaks she needed in the most important spots. Even going back to Day 1 where Grace was involved in a three-way all-in with none other than Patrick Lavecchia and another player. Grace (holding Q 9) was up against the A A of Lavecchia and the J 4 of the third player. She went on to flop a nine, and then river another nine to take down the hand and never look back.
Alex Rocha (South Setauket, NY) was the chip leader seemingly from the beginning of this event, coming into Day 2, and coming into the final table as well. He was one of numerous notable players in this stacked field which carried 323 entries and a total buy-in of $113,050. Of these many notables, Grace would best John Del Rossi, Robert "Action Bob" Hwuang, Joe Commisso...and this was just at the final table.
When the players were three handed (Sun, Rocha, and Lavecchia), Grace won a big hand against Rocha where she turned trips and rivered a full house. She had Rocha raising her on the river, and eventually saw him fold to her all-in. From then on out we seemed to see a different Grace, playing with a determined mind.
Grace is one of a few in this Borgata Poker Open to make two final tables, taking home $2,804 for her 4th place finish in Event 8 (Ladies No Limit Hold'em). She went from financial planner to professional poker player just over a year ago, and since has had 11 casheS between the Borgata and WSOP. We can expect to see her next week in the televised WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship event, and wish her the best of luck.
