Event 1: Leader-Watch

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Pete Skyllas is up to ~500k and still in the lead.

Hobart Adkins

Hobart Adkins (Huntington, WV) is his closest rival with about 470k.

27 tables active leaves 270 players still in the race for 1A.

950 new entries already registered for day 1B.

Event 1: Blinds Up, Shamseddin Down

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 15:  Blinds 1,500/3,000 with 400 ante.

Early chip leader Soheil Shamseddin has busted out.  He's headed for the lobby to get in line to register for day 1B.

Apparently the line is ~200 deep right now.

Tournament Director extraordinaire Tab Duchateau says he has to cut off new registrations for day 1B at ~1,500, so they still have space (tables, dealers, and chips) for the 1B re-entries.

They could get close to that number tonight before registration closes.  They already have 895 new entires for 1B, not counting those standing in line.

31 tables (310 players) remain in the hunt on day 1A.

The average stack is almost 126k.

Event 1: New Chip Leader

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

A new leader has emerged on table 1.

Pete Skyllas

Pete Skyllas (Manhattan, NY) is sitting behind 465k and out in front of the field.

He's sharing table 1 with Michael Marder and Jia Liu, (Brooklyn, NY) winner of the 2012 Borgata Spring Open Championship.

Event 1: Ups & Downs

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

About 10 players in the room are over 300k, but I can't find any player who has made 400k yet.  That $10k chip leader bonus is on everyone's mind.

Michael Marder (Sewell, NJ) had about 330k after rivering a flush to bust two players, then busting a third player on a subsequent hand.

Then his AQ suited ran into pocket Queens and he fell back to about 100k.

Michael was runner-up in the 2012 Borgata Summer Open Championship event, taking home over $110k for his efforts.

Event 1: 39 Tables Remain

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Play resumed after the break and relocate with Level 14, blinds 1,200/2,400 with 300 ante.

There are a total of 39 tables now, with 390 or fewer players remaining for day 1A.

They will play straight through three levels, then call it a night.  That's 2.5 hours more of poker, until about 1am.

Rumor has it that registration, which was scheduled to close at midnight, will stay open until the end of play so that those last-minute bust-outs can get in line and register for day 1B tonight.

Event 1: Movin' On Up

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Another tough table over on 25:

Dean Schultz, (Stow, OH) Guyana Petrossian, (Brooklyn, NY) and Paul Spitzberg (Tenafly, NJ) are sharing that felt.

Dean Schultz & Josh Brikis

Josh Brikis (Pittsburgh, PA) was just one row over and I caught him chatting up Dean Schultz in between hands.  Josh's table has since broken.

After level 13, they began a 15 minute break and began moving the remaining players up from the poker room.

When play resumes, they'll be all together for the first time today.

Event 1: New Chip Leader

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Soheil Shamseddin has dropped back to about 230k.

 Carlos Berenguer

Now Carlos Berenguer (Bloomingdale, NJ) leads the players in the event center with ~385k.

28 tables remain in the event center as they approach the end of level 13.

Event 1: Israelashvilli Stacking Chips

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Roland Israelashvilli (Forest Hill, NY) is trying to extend his WSOP run-good.  He's doing well so far with over 200k.

Roland Israelashvilli

This summer, he made the final table of the $50k Players Championship, finishing 5th for over $317k.  Then in addition to three other cashes, he went on to finish 25th in the WSOP Main Event, good for another $294k.

Not a bad summer for the jeweler from New York.

Event 1: Tough Table

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 13: Blinds 1k/2k with 300 ante.

As tables break, the remaining tables get a lot tougher.

Adam Cook, Pierre Deissler, & Wooyang Lin

One tough corner I spotted was on table 7.  Seated there were Adam Cook, Pierre Deissler, and Wooyang Lin, all Borgata tournament regulars.

Unfortunately, Adam busted out before I got this post finished.  I expect we'll see him again for day 1B.

Event 1: Tables Breaking

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Players are busting rapidly and tables are breaking down here in the Event Center.  Only 33 remain up here.  The Poker Room tables will be moved up here soon, in order to combine the field for the end of the night.

Lee Childs just got his last ~20k chips in with AJ, only to run into pocket Aces on the button.  Lee will be starting over tomorrow with a fresh 25k stack.

Also gone:
Julie Cornelius
Amanda Musumeci
John Hinds
Trevor Savage
Alex Rocha
Dan Buzgon
Vinny Pahuja
Roman Valerstein

Event 1: Cowboys v Giants

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

You would think that the room would be filled with New York Giants fans, given our proximity to New York, but I had a hard time finding any players remaining in the main event sporting Giants gear.

Dave Grandieri - Rooting for the Cowboys

A very brave Dave Grandieri (Danbury, CT) is proudly wearing his Dallas Cowboys jersey.

I did find some Giants fans over in event 28, the $150 Black Chip Bounty tournament.

Giants Fans -- playing Event 28

The game is underway on four giant screens here in the Event Center, but neither team has scored yet.

Event 1: Day 1B Players Read This!!!

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Event Center Packed on Day 1A

With a huge field expected Thursday, Borgata tournament officials are recommending that players register tonight for Day 1B.

More than 600 players have already registered for Day 1B and considering that there were 1,559 entries for Day 1A, the Event Center and Poker Rooms will be packed and lines could be long in the morning.

The Event Center registration desk will be open until midnight before reopening at 8 am.

Officials caution that anyone arriving late for the 11 am start could be disappointed as seating is limited.  Even though there are 170 poker tables (90 Event Center/80 Poker Room) on property, there's a chance that the tournament will be capped.

Borgata will do everything it can to get all players into the field and by registering tonight it will help make that happen.

Late entry and registration will be open until ~3:30 pm.

Event 1: Back to Business

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Post-dinner play is underway!

Level 12:  Blinds 800/1,600 with 200 ante.

Event 1: Another Big Stack

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Carlos in Contention

Anyone in the 200k-250k range is definitely a big stack, which is were Soheil Shamseddin (Houston, TX) is after cresting at 315k.

One of the biggest stacks we find in the Event Center belongs to Carlos Berenguer (Bloomingdale, NJ) who's at 275k.

On one of the final hands before dinner break Berenguer had two pairs and not only dodged the flush draw but hit a boat on the river.

Event 1: 58 Tables

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

With 58 tables left (40 Event Center/18 Poker Room)  there are ~570 players remaining.

The average stack is 68k (43 BB) as play resumes with Level 12 (800/1,600/200 ante).

The field will play five more levels tonight with bag and tag scheduled for ~1 a.m.

At some point during the evening the players in the Poker Room will be moved upstairs to the Event Center.  It will then be a dash for the cash as players go for the $10,000 bonus for the end of Day 1A chip leader.

Dinner break continues with play resuming at 8:30 p.m.

Event 1: Dinner Time!

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

The dinner vouchers have been distributed in the Poker Room and at the end of level 11, the survivors were sent on a one-hour dinner break.

18 tables remain and will resume play at about 8:26 pm.

Event 1: Bloggers are NOT a Curse

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

No Curse for Kessler

A lot of players believe in the "Blogger Curse," where a blogger showing up means chip stacks go down.  That's clearly not the case for Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler here at Event 1 of the Borgata Poker Open.

Kessler stops by press row on his way to dinner break to let us know that he's slowly increased his stack since he's gotten media attention.  Two different photographers snapped pictures as he went from 60k to more than 100k on break.

"I didn't win any big pots," says Kessler who has nearly $2.5 million in career tournament earnings, and is off to a good start in this event.

After raising one pot, and the big blind tank-folds, Kessler says, "I've only played five hands," just to to send a message of how he's been playing.

Event 1: Big Pot, Big Suckout

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Three players got to the turn with a board of K T 5 K.

Ryan Pollack (South Jersey) gets all in with pocket Tens (Tens-full).

Dean Chen (Ellenville, NY) is all-in with AK (trip Kings).

A third player folds pocket Aces (Aces-up).

Dean Chen

Then a crushing 4-outer Ace hits the river, giving Dean Kings-full to take the pot, busting Ryan in the process.  (The third player would have taken it all with Aces-full, if he had not folded on the turn.)

Dean chipped up to about 220k.

Event 1: Straight to the Top

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Cha-Cha Chips Up

Steve Cha (New York, New York) admits he made a debatable call on the flop, but his gutshot gutter ball ends up paying dividends

Cha and his opponent are all in for a 280k pot and Cha's straight hangs on against a flush draw that bricks on the river.

"It was a gift from God," says one player who barely had his opponent covered and is now one of the big stacks in the room.

Event 1: Blinds Up, Times Up

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 11 (600/1,200/200 ante) is underway and players have their eye on dinner break.

In addition to blinds going up, this is the first level that is 50 minutes long (up from 40 min).

That puts the dinner bell at 7:25 when players will get a one hour break.

********Player Update******

Derrek Marmen (Baltimore, MD) stops by media row to tell us that chip leader Soheil Shamseddin (Houston, TX) is "human."

Marmen gets a double up from 40k to 80k, taking a bite out of Shamseddin's stack which now drops less than 300k.

Event 1: Poker Room Update

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Only 22 tables are still active in the Poker Room.

Among those I spotted some more familiar faces:

Al 'the Perisan Diversian' Navid
Robert Melo
Esther 'e-tay' Taylor
Jia Liu
Kirkor 'Coco' Tekneci
Lonnie Heimowitz

Lonnie Heimowitz (Monticello, NY) has the dubious distinction of being 5th in the ranking of players with the most WSOP cashes withOUT a WSOP bracelet.  He has 34 cashes and trails Tony Cousineau, (53) Tom McCormick, (42) Chad Brown, (37) and Marco Traniello (36).

Event 1: M-Rod Quadruples

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

After three players entered the pot for 3k, Mario Rodriguez (Jersey City, NJ) decided he was priced in and shoved his last 5k.  Everyone called.

The flop came K 9 2 with one club and was checked around.

Turn was the 7♣ and was again checked around.

River was the 8 and they checked it down.

Mario showed 8♣2♣ for two pair to claim the pot, quadrupling up to ~20k.

Mike Dentale and Mario Rodriguez

Mike Dentale (Brooklyn, NY) who has recently been seen on ESPN during coverage of the 2012 WSOP Main Event, turned up to help Mario celebrate his survival in the hand.  Mike will be playing (again) on day 1B tomorrow.

Event 1: Another Feature Table

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Brooks (left) and Dannenmann (right)

One of our feature tables just got a shake up as one former Borgata event winner, Steve Dannenmann (Severn MD), has been replaced by another in Phil Neiman (Flushing, NY).

Still at this tough table is 2012 Borgata Summer Poker Open winner, Melad Marji, and Joey "the B" Brooks, both of Atlantic City.  Sandwiched between those two is Danny Beaudrot (Lindenhurst, NY).

Marji won nearly $200,000 in June for his first live tournament win and largest cash ever.

Event 1: Break-Time Tweets

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 10:  Blinds 500/1,000 with 100 ante.

This is the last 40-minute level.  Starting with level 11, they increase to 50 minutes.

Here are some of the player Tweets from the break:

Michael Marder ‏@MMarder86

Event 1: Numbers Game

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Approximately 800 players remain of the 1,559 who began the day and they're split between the Event Center and the Poker Room.

With nearly 39 million chips in play, a quick run of the numbers has the average stack at 49k (49 BB) as blinds are moving up to 500/1k/100 ante.

The tournament organizers are stressing to players that anyone who is eliminated today and planning on playing Day 1B that they should register tonight.

300 players are already for registered for tomorrow and the lines are expected to be crazy.

Registration in the Event Center is open until midnight.

Event 1: Color-Up Break

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

End of level 9 and players are on a 15-minute color-up break.

The green 25 chips are coming off the tables.

Just before the break, another table was disbanded, leaving 25 in the Poker Room (250 players).

Event 1: In The Hunt

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

With 6+ levels left to play today, there is still plenty of time for players to claim that $10k bonus.

James Lillis

In the UN-enviable seat to the right of big stack Andrew Mullen, sits James Lillis (Robinsville, NJ).  He's got a respectable 100k stack and is in good shape for a run at the bonus.

Also over 100k is Borgata Regular Mike Kalfa, (Bayville, NJ) who is up to 110k.

27 tables remain active in the Poker Room.

***  Shortly after this was posted, James' table broke and he was rewarded with a new seat NOT next to a big stack.

Event 1: Clear Chip Leader

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Soheil Straight to the Top

With all due respect to the players in the Poker Room, the chip leader is Soheil Shamseddin (Houston, TX).

The gunslinger, who has more than $1.5 million in career earnings, is sitting with 315k and as one player at this star studded table said, "he's hitting everything."

Shamseddin is joined by Eric "Pools" Siegel, James Boyd and Alex Rocha who are all Borgata veterans and steering clear of the big stack, who has more than the rest of the table combined.

Shamseddin's good fortune is illustrated by a hand where he had 4 5 offsuit and flopped a straight against a set of 6s, set of 7s and top two pairs.

"I was smart enough to fold," says Derrek Marmen (Baltimore, MD) who mucked the worst of the four hands and watched Shamseddin knock out the other two players.

Level 9 (400/800/75 ante) is winding down.

Event 1: Poker Room Big Stacks

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Blinds are up to 400/800 with 75 ante (level 9).

The room is abuzz with talk about the $10,000 bonus for end of day 1A/1B chip leaders and everyone wants to know "What's the big stack got?"

Andrew Mullen

I scoured the tables remaining in the Poker Room and the biggest stack I found belongs to Andrew Mullen (Newtown, PA).  Andrew's got about 150k.

Sam Taylor & Shawn Bartholomew

Sam Taylor (Manhattan, NY) is a close second with ~140k.

Shawn Bartholomew (Bronx, NY) is a even-closer-third with 135k.

Event 1: Poker Room Familiar Faces

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Lots of Borgata tournament regulars are still in action down here in the poker room.  On my last pass through the crowd, I spotted these:

Sirous Jamshidi
Bo Toft
Mickey Woll
David Fox
Miguel Borrero
Joseph Brand
Mario Rodriguez
Jose Silverman
Tom Evers
Jin Hwang
Mike Kalfa
Natale Kuey
John Lakatosh
Anthony Zinno
Tony Antonious
Ron 'Schifty' Schiffman
Travell Thomas

Event 1: No More Manh

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Down in the Poker Room, tables are breaking fast.  34 are still in action down here.

No longer among the active is Manh Nguyen, 2-time Borgata Open winner (2012 Spring Open, $350 Black Chip Bounty, good for $30k & 2011 BPO $500 NL, for almost $40k).

Manh Nguyen

After a middle position player opened for 1,325 and got one caller, the button raised to 5k.

Manh (bb) 4-bet for 12k, sending the opener in to the tank.  He eventually folded, as did the caller.

The button then spent some time in the tank before deciding to 5-bet enough to cover Manh's remaining stack.  Manh obliged by putting his chips all-in and rolling over two red 6s.

His opponent was trailing with A9 offsuit.

Then board ran out K Q 9 7 3, which looked good for Manh, but when the fourth spade landed on the river, his opponent made a flush to take the pot.

Manh is done for today, but we'll see him back tomorrow for day 1b.  He summed it up in his Tweet:

Lost a flip to go Busto. On to day 1B #BPO2012

Event 1: 1,500+ Impresses Many

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

A couple of big hitting Borgata regulars have just rolled into the Event Center and after skipping Day 1A are registered for Day 1B.

"Pleasantly surprised, but never underestimate the pull of Borgata," says James Boyle (Havre De Grace, MD) when he heard today's total of 1,559.

Boyle, who is a past winner of the Borgata Leaderboard promotion, and Gordon Eng (Cliffside Park, NJ), nearly $800,00 in career tournament earnings, are surveying the field and trading barbs with players still playing Day 1A

Steven Dannenmann (Severn, MD), the 2005 WSOP Main Event Runner-up, is one of their targets as Boyle and Eng can't wait to get a crack at this $1 million guaranteed prize pool.

Steve Ryan (New York, NY) also just walked in and is impressed with the $10,000 bonus that goes to the Day 1A & Day 1B end of night chip leaders.

Event 1: Breakin' It Down

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 6 is (200/400/50) in the books, players are on a 15 min break, and re-entry period is now closed.

Event 1: Big Stacks vs Shorties

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

As Level 6 (200/400/50 ante) continues, the big stacks have their eye on the $10,000 prize for the end of night chip leader, while short stacks are trying to decide if it's worth dumping their stacks instead of grinding the rest of the way.

Short stacks may surrender their chips and re-enter for a fresh 25k at the end of the level.

The big stacks have more than 100k, which is where Austen Johnson, Cherish Andrews and Lee Childs are all around.

One member of media row set the line at 315k as the over/under as the highest count at the end of Day 1A.

"I only have to triple my stack," says Childs, who is at 105k and a long way from Level 16, which will be the last level of the night.

Event 1: Double Trouble

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

With a field of more than 1,400 players, it's bound to happen that poker friends end up side-by-side.

Here are a couple of duos as Level 6 (200/400/50 ante), the last level re-entry is available, is underway.

Steve Eyzerovich & Jamie Kerstetter

"Little Man" Mike Sica & Michael Marder

Event 1: Tales From the Felt

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

A couple of recognizable names are passing along some quick tales from the felt:

Chalie Hook (2009 Borgata Summer Open Heads Up Winner) doubled up with aces on his first hand against kings.

Dwyte Pilgrim (2010 Borgata Poker Open Championship event winner), "I only played one hand, aces and hit a set on the river."  Pilgrim gets chips from his opponent who had two pairs.

Mike "the Nose" Castaldo (2011 Borgata Winter Poker Open $450 Deep Stack Winner) is down to 5,500, which is actually an uptick after winning his third straight all in without a call.

"You don't get this kind of value playing in $1,600 tournaments," says Castaldo who says he's willing to enter the tournament up to four times.  "I don't want to, but you can't beat the value."

Level 5 (150/300/25 ante) is underway as the first antes of the tournament are now in play.

Event 1: Halfway Home

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

The unofficial head count for Day 1A is 1,385 entries as registration and re-entry is open through Level 6 (approximately 3:30 pm).

That's more than half of the necessary total to reach the $1 MILLION GUARANTEE (2,000+ entries).

In addition to the fantastic early turnout, players are talking about the $10,000 bonus that will be paid out to the chip leaders at the end of Day 1A and Day 1B.

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Players are taking advantage of the food options in the Event Center as they catch their breath.

A couple of friendly faces are taking advantage of the soft pretzels, meatball sandwiches and ice cream including:

Steve Dannenmann
Matt Mazzeo
Eric Siegel
Saad Ghanem
Sean Knitter
Mike Linster

Event 1: Ducks Crack Aces

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

As Level 3 (75/150) winds down, Mike Magor (Woodmere,NY) flop quads while holding pocket 2s, but says he may have to work on his acting.  He says he was "Hollywooding" on the river knowing he had the stone cold nuts and eventually put his opponent all in.

"How often do you get to do it," says Magor, who cracks pocket aces.  His opponent snap calls after flopping a full house aces full of twos, but it's no match for four quacking ducks.

Magor is up to 47k.

Event 1: Familiar Faces

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Cherish the New Look

Lots of familiar faces are in the field for Event 1 of the Borgata Poker Open, but one has a different look.

Cherish Andrews (St. Thomas, PA) is changing it up with darker, longer hair from her more recognizable platinum blonde.

Across the room is Cuong Phung (Atlantic City, NJ) who has the same steely look he used to win the Summer Open Leaderboard promotion.

Players are getting antsy as we're playing Level 3 (75/150) and getting closer to the first break of the day.

Phung Focused as Ever

Event 1: Inside the Minds

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

 Getting Inside Taya's Mind

Inside the Minds, as profiled in the Borgata Poker Blog, wrapped up another poker strategy class as poker pro Lee Childs led another session.

Joining Childs as instructors were pros Jason Young and David Inselberg who talked about everything from table image to post-flop play.

"It was great," says Childs, "we love teaching, especially here at Borgata where we did our first ever class."

A couple of up and coming women took part in the training, including Borgata regulars Julie Anna (Rockville, MD) Cornelius and Taya Kuznetsova (New York, NY).

"I'm starting to play bigger tournaments and wanted to prepare," says Kuznetsova, while playing in today's event.  Kuznetsova, who's been profiled in the blog, says she plans on playing the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship event and learned a lot of  "mental strategies" in yesterday's class.

Event 1: Toby Takes One Down

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

  Holly Hangin' with Toby

The one player per hand rule is being waived on Table 56 as Holly Gilman (Westerly, RI) is getting help from Toby, a stuffed raccoon.

"I saw him in a kids store and I had to have him," she says after crippling her opponent with Q Q♣.

After being raised on the turn with the board showing 4 10♠ 3 10, Gilman leads out for 9,100 and the raiser snap calls and mucks the losing hand.

"I'm obsessed with him," she says, adding that Toby is now his "run good" good luck charm who is starting to get evil looks from the other players at the table.  Toby and Gilman are up to 36k.

Event 1: Ready to Roll

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

You know there's going to be a huge field when Tournament Director Tab Duchateau announces, "anyone with a table number higher than 90, is downstairs in the Poker Room."  This as the doors open and players file into the Event Center.

With a $1 MILLION GUARANTEE in the opening event of the 2012 Borgata Poker Open, players are anxious to start playing on one of the 170 poker tables on property.

Players are gearing up to take multiple shots as there are plenty of re-entry opportunities over the two starting days.

"As many as it takes," says Austen Johnson (Woodsboro, MD), a former Borgata Leaderboard Open winner (June, 2011), who plans on re-entering if necessary.  "Put it this way, I'll be playing Day 2 no matter what. There's too much value."

There's a slow simmer as players wait for the magic words, "shuffle up and deal!"
