Event 9 Recap
$350 + $50 Big Stack Pot Limit Omaha High (Re-Entry)
Charlie Morgenstern (Chesterfield, NJ) dominated the final table of the Pot Limit Omaha event, only surrendering the chip lead briefly near the end. He claimed $15,381 and his first Borgata Poker Open trophy for the win.
Second place went to professional poker player Chun Chen, (Seattle, WA) good for $8,459. Chen wrestled the chip lead from Morgenstern just before the dinner break when he flopped the nut flush.
After dinner, Morgenstern flopped a full house to double up through third-place finisher Bryce Fox (Pittsburgh, PA). Fox was left with only 100k -- less than two big blinds -- but doubled up three times and climbed back to 1 million chips. After getting Morgenstern all in with the worst of it, Morgenstern caught runner-runner to make two pair and double up -- again knocking Fox down to about 100k. Fox busted out soon after, earning $4,870 for third place.
Pot Limit Omaha always brings out interesting players and this final table did not disappoint. It featured one Canadian, Adrian Baran, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and one Brit, Jeffrey Duvall, from London, England. Baran finished 4th for $4,101. Duvall, who already has two Borgata Open trophies to his credit, finished 6th for $2,563.
Also at this final table was accomplished Borgata regular Yuebin Guo (Brooklyn, NY). Guo, who has three Borgata Open titles, finished 5th for $3,076. Well known poker pro Allen 'Chainsaw' Kessler (Las Vegas, NV) rounded out this final table, finishing 8th for $1,538.
Charlie Morgenstern played good Samaritan on his drive to Borgata, stopping to help a stranded motorist. He then told his wife he was going to win and to "look for his picture with four cards and a trophy". His son Jackson is anxious for him to get home, but we'll see him back for the main event next week.

$350 + 50 Deep Stack No Limit Hold'em

Players are on a one hour dinner break and chip leader Alex Rocha (S. Setaukey, NY) is disputing another player's account that he was gifted chips during the last level.
Rocha says he made a good call with third pair on a flush heavy board, which tilted the player into 5-bet shipping his remaining 75k on the next hand. Rocha opened the betting with pocket kings and when the hands were tabled he was against A2 for the knockout.
Rocha is up to 300k and now 5 for 5 in dinner vouchers as he's made the dinner break in every tournament he's played at the Borgata Poker Open.

Players start with 12k in chips and the early levels last 30 minutes each (Levels 11+ / 40 min.).
This two day tournament is underway.

Event 9: 15th Place - Doerr
$350 + $50 Big Stack Pot Limit Omaha High (Re-Entry)
Eric "Clownfish" Doerr (Newark, DE)
$897
Doerr is crippled early on Day 2 when chip leader Charles Morgenstern has a higher two pairs with pocket queens. Doerr eventually busts in 15th place.
Event 9: 16th Place - Campanelli
$350 + $50 Big Stack Pot Limit Omaha High (Re-Entry)
Myriam Campanelli (Saint Leonard, Canada)
$769
Campanelli has AAxx vs Jeffrey Duvall's KKxx. A king hits the board and Campanelli is out in 16th place.
Event 9: 17th Place - Stevens
$350 + $50 Big Stack Pot Limit Omaha High (Re-Entry)
Matt Stevens (Brecksville, OH)
$769
Stevens returns as the short stack with only 3k (less than the SB) and misses a flush draw on the river that would've given him a triple-up.
Erik Gorman was also all in and at risk vs Chun Chen, but the two chop the pot with AK and eliminate Stevens in 17th place.
Event 9: Ready for Restart
$350 + $50 Big Stack Pot Limit Omaha High (Re-Entry)
The final 17 players are slowly arriving and unbagging their chips. Charles Morgenstern is the chip leader with 403k (50BB) and everyone is in the money and guaranteed $769 as they go after the top prize of $15,381.
The average stack is 178k (22 BB) as play resumes with blinds at 4k/8k.

Event 10: Bad Beat! Bad Beat! (but no BBJ)
$350 + $50 Deep Stack No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)
"Why wasn't it in a cash game," laments John De Lio (Boothyn, PA) who's quad 7s are beaten by the straight flush of Matt Isles (Atco, NJ).
"I guess I wasted my 'one time' in a tournament," says Isles who doubles his 25k starting stack, while De Lio re-enters the tournament.
De Lio has 7♦ 7♠ against Isles 5♣ 6♣ as De Lio flops quads on a board of 7♣ 7♥ 9♣.
After the K♣ on the turn, the 8♣ brings fireworks.
DeLio bets 2k into a 3k pot, and Isles makes an ill-advised, an almost egregious all-in bet of 22k, but it works out perfectly as De Lio snap calls.
Isles's 9-high straight flush beats DeLio's quads and the table can't believe the bad beat is on a tournament table.
"It would've been the small one," says Isles, noting that the same hand in a cash game would've earned everyone at the table a payday. "It would've been great to split up $50,000."
The large Bad Beat Jackpot in the Poker Room is currently at nearly $300,000.

Olga, the next dealer at the table, says, "I would've puked If I did it," as both dealers and players are always chasing the jackpot and everyone hates to waste a bad beat hand in a tournament.

Event 8: Recap
$260 + 40 Ladies No Limit Hold'em
It was the ladies who were front and center for Event 8, and this was no easy field. Ruth Ruffman (Colts Neck, NJ) took home the trophy and $10,518 for her first major tournament win. When she started heads up play with Irene Perrakis (Foster City, CA), it was pretty much an even playing field.
Ruffman began to chip away as the blinds continued to grow, and although both Ruffman and Perrakis both flopped a pair of sixes on the final hand, it was the turn which would seal Ruffman's fate. Ruth turned two pair to take the lead, and all the chips made it into the middle.
Event 8 had 139 entrants and carried with it a total buy-in of $36,140. The field was filled with a ton of Borgata regulars and familiar faces that added to their lifetime earnings. Helen Ellis (New York, NY) made her second final table of this Borgata Poker Open, and followed her 6th place finish in Event 2 (HORSE), with a 5th place finish tonight.
Other notables to make the final table were Grace Sun (Merrick, NY), Marguerite Spagnuolo (Staten Isalnd, NY), Nancy Martin (Washington Crossing, PA), and Sarah Wasch (Philadelphia, PA). Claire Chiang held a dominant chip lead one the bubble burst, but ended up finishing in 12th place.
Ruffman's biggest prior live cash was at last year's Borgata Summer Open where she collected $3,740 for a 7th Place finish in a $200 + 30 Deepstack No Limit event. Ruth says she only plays at Borgata, and can now add this five figure cash to her lifetime earnings, bringing them up to $15,000.
She is a busy woman with a husband and three kids, on top of running a business back in Colts Neck, but she said we can expect to see more of her throughout this Borgata Poker Open.

Event 8: Winner - Ruffman
$260 + 40 Ladies No Limit Hold'em
Ruth Ruffman (Colts Neck, NJ)
Event 8 Winner - $10,518
Ruth Ruffman was heads up with Irene Perrakis, and it started pretty even matched. Ruth had a small chip advantage, but began to quickly chip away. On a board of 9 8 4 6, Ruth bet out 200k and was then left with a decision to call another 208k after Perrakis pushed. Ruffman called and showed 6 4 for two pair, while Irene table J 6. Perrakis could not manage to reclaim the lead she had on the flop, and Ruffman was left the lift the trophy.
Event 9: Play Ends with 17 Players - Morgenstern Leads
$350+$50 Big Stack Pot Limit Omaha High Re-Entry
Play has ended for the night in Event 9. After Eric Doerr was chipped away, Charlie Morgenstern is the chip leader going into Day 2. Shockingly, Ted Geier was the only elimination after the bubble burst and 17 players remain including Adrian Baran at 369k, Peter Ippolito at 314k, Yuebin Guo at 302k and Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler at 297k.
The most interesting situation was Matthew Stevens reaching his goal of getting to Day 2 while short stacked. It will probably be a short day for him as he carries a meager 3,000 chips into tomorrow.
Here are your chipstacks and table draw for the start of tomorrow's play:

Event 6: Recap
$1000 + 90 No Limit Hold'em
It took two days for the Borgata Poker Open's first $1000 plus buy-in tournament to conclude, but when the dust settled is was Martin Matranca (Miami, FL) who claimed the trophy for Event 6 along with a $48,595 pay day. Matranca bested Troy Skinner (Safford, AZ) heads up, along with a star studded field throughout the two days. "I was really fortunate...and very lucky, and I'm extremely happy to have finally gotten one. I always wanted one of these," as Matranca picks up the trophy for first place with a smile.
Matranca had re-entered this event, and after first busting ended up at the same table he had just left. Matranca felt that was a stroke of luck for him because of the prior image he had left the table with. Midway through the event (after being top three in chips), Matranca experienced, "a monster five-bet bluff which I lost." He mentioned this normally would have thrown him off his game and expedited a quick exit, but he battened down the hatches and continued towards his goal of recouping the lost chips.
It was a bold all-in that won Matranca the tournament, after an even eye-popping call from Skinner. Skinner felt like his ace high was good on a Kc Kh 8c 4d 3c after Matranca had shipped it, and made the call with over 100 big blinds. Skinner's A 5 was narrowly bested by the A 7 of Matranca, and the heads up play was done after three hands. Before disposing of Skinner, Matranca had to navigate a final table consisting of Lee Childs, Michael Linster, and Jospeh McKeehen.
The event attracted 167 entrants, and carried a total buy-in of $167,000. John Dibella (Westchester, NY) was the chip leader coming into day two. Dibella was coming off a million plus win at the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure, and was one of the favorites coming back. Skinner was second in chips when they bagged after day 1, while Matranca sat at the chip average. Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler also made the second day, heading a quality field.
Martin Matranca eclipsed his total tournament winnings ($31,000) with this win alone, and with the additional $45,595 now sits just under $80,000 lifetime earnings. Matranca's face should be remembered as he plans to continue his good fortune throughout the rest of the Borgata Poker Open.

Event 8: 5th Place - Ellis
$260 + 40 Ladies No Limit Hold'em
Helen Ellis (New York, NY)
5th Place - $2,103
Helen is only one of a handful of players who can say the final tabled two events in the same Borgata Poker Open, and we are only a week in! She placed 6th in our HORSE event, and now follows that up with an improving 5th place today.
Event 9: Things Seen and Heard During a Bubble
Amazing what conversations take place when you're hand-for-hand on a tournament bubble.
- One table got into a conversation debating whether saying "I have to fold" is a binding action or not. A 10 minute discussion ensued with no one seeming to know the definitive answer and many variants and clarifiers added to make it even more interesting.
- Peter Ippolito, who burst the bubble, was a tad anxious to get back to the table after he stepped away. Running past media and the tournament director, he crashed into the side of the table spilling his drinks. When asked why he was in such a hurry considering he had a sizable stack, he responded that there were "giant people" in his way.
Ippolito's party foul resulted in the table having to be vacated after the bubble burst due to felt saturation. No word whether he'll be receiving a reduction in his payout for a cleaning bill.

Event 9: Bubble Bursts - 18 Remain
$350+50 Big Stack Pot Limit Omaha High
Simultaneous all-ins on two tables result in the bubble bursting in Event 9.
Yuebin Guo (New York, NY) survives his all in as his A2♣ knocked off Charlie Morganstern's aces as he flopped the nut flush and survived.
Peter Ippolito (East Meadow, NY) finished the job as his AJ92 held against his opponent's 9654. The flop came 9-3-2 giving Ippolito two pair against an open-ended straight draw. But an 8 on the turn and J on the river ended the hand.
All players are now guaranteed $769 for the efforts and are chasing a top prize of $15,381.

$260 + 40 Ladies No Limit Hold'em
Nancy Martin (Washington Crossing, PA)
(Nancy's rail Pat on left)
6th Place - $1,753
Nancy used the double up right before the bubble to propel herself to the final table, where she seemed to be gaining traction. Unfortunately for Nancy her nines couldn't hold up against the A 10 of Ruth Ruffman, and she was eliminated in sixth. Irene Perrakis is the current chip leader with just over 400k, with Ruffman close behind with 370k.
Event 8: 7th Place - Wasch
$260 + 40 Ladies No Limit Hold'em
Sarah Wasch (Philadelphia, PA)
7th Place - $1,402
Sarah did an unbelievable job with the short stack she had deal with in final stages of the event. She only had slight bit more than 10 BB when she shipped it in with A 6 suited. Irene Perrakis woke up to a pair of tens, and they held up leaving Wasch to walk to the cage collecting seventh place money.
